Where Code Meets the Living Word.

Traditional reading apps treat words as static pixels, and text-to-speech tools turn literature into robotic announcements. Shruti was crafted to restore the intimacy, theatre, and cadence of spoken storytelling — entirely on your device.

01 • The Motivation

Why We Built Shruti

A rebellion against robotic, paywalled audiobook platforms and sterile, mechanical e-readers.

For centuries, stories were never meant to be consumed in silence. Literature began as an oral tradition — whispered around fires, performed on stages, and recited with natural pauses, emotional weight, and character inflection.

Yet today’s digital landscape forces readers into a disheartening compromise:

Robotic Text-to-Speech: Built-in device engines sound like monotone automated switchboards, ignoring dramatic tension and sentence melody.
Walled Subscription Gardens: Commercial platforms lock your books behind proprietary apps, charging recurring monthly fees for books in the public domain or volumes you already own.
Privacy & Tracking: Cloud readers stream every page turn to corporate telemetry servers, harvesting your habits and annotations.

We wanted something radically different: a sanctuary where literature is bound in tactile cloth and rich linen, read aloud with neural human nuance, and cast with distinct voices for dialogue — running 100% locally and privately on your GPU with zero cloud roundtrips.

The Shruti Philosophy

A Handcrafted Reading Sanctuary

Every line of code serves one singular purpose: honoring the beauty of the written word.

  • Neural WebGPU Kokoro: Zero cloud servers or API keys needed.
  • Multi-Voice Casting: Distinct actors for narrative & dialogue.
  • 100% Client Privacy: Everything stays inside local IndexedDB.
  • Tactile Cloth & Foil: Classical linen cloth textures with gold and ivory foil stamping.

Crafted With Modern Web Engineering

Merging cutting-edge browser capabilities with classical editorial aesthetics.

WebGPU Neural Engine

Runs the 82M-parameter Kokoro TTS model directly in browser memory using ONNX Runtime WebGPU for instantaneous, fluid audio synthesis.

Theatrical Director

Analyzes quotation syntax and conversational structure in real time, assigning expressive character voices to characters like Della, Jim, or the Narrator.

Offline & Airgapped

Your EPUBs, PDFs, notes, and reading bookmarks live exclusively in local IndexedDB. Nothing is ever transmitted to remote analytical endpoints.

Artisanal Design System

Roadmap • What’s Next

Cross-Device PDF & Progress Sync

In Development

We are actively designing private cross-device synchronization. Soon, you’ll be able to bind a PDF or EPUB on your desktop and seamlessly continue listening or reading from the exact sentence and page on your tablet or mobile device — with all annotations, highlights, and custom character cast settings preserved, while strictly maintaining Shruti’s zero-telemetry privacy ethos.

The Creator

Code Meets Creativity.

“I believe in tools that disappear, leaving only pure creativity and human experience behind. Shruti is my attempt to return the warmth and intimacy of spoken storytelling to readers everywhere — free, private, and beautifully crafted.”

Mehedi Hasan Tanvir

Developer & Creator

Hi, I’m Mehedi Hasan Tanvir. I build software at the intersection of browser technology, graphic design, and human-centered user experience.

Shruti (শ্রুতি) was born from a desire to rethink how we experience literature on modern screens. Software should feel quiet and respectful, honoring great writing with the dignity it deserves rather than turning it into automated noise.

Why should high-quality neural narration require monthly subscriptions or remote cloud streaming? Why can’t an e-reader look as tactile and dignified as a leather or clothbound book on a hardwood shelf? By combining WebGPU, on-device AI, and purpose-built editorial design, Shruti turns any browser into an intimate, private sanctuary for literature.
